About Harrison Dock

Our History

In 1978, Karl Kotter and his son Rick Kotter founded Kotter Dock to offer businesses a cost-effective solution for loading and unloading cargo from barges. The Kotters quickly recognized the need for a cargo handling terminal in Metropolis, IL, given its strategic location on the Ohio River. In 1984, Bill Harrison and his son Rodger Harrison founded Waterway Ag, Inc., a wholesale bulk fertilizer company. The Kotters partnered with the Harrisons by leasing them storage space and unloading their fertilizer. A few short years later, Waterway Ag became Kotter Dock’s largest customer.

After four decades under the ownership and operation of the Kotters, the dock
transitioned to new ownership in December 2021 when Rodger Harrison and his son Blake acquired the facility. With this change, Kotter Dock was renamed Harrison Dock and is now managed by Waterway Ag. Both the Kotters and the Harrisons are excited to see the dock remain an independent, family-run business. Rodger and Blake plan to build upon the strong foundation established by the Kotters, continuing the tradition of providing high-quality dock services.
